Captains for 2021 confirmed

Thornham Cricket Club can confirm the appointment of its captains for the 2021 GMCL season after committee approval last night.

The First XI, looking to build on the successful 2020 campaign, will again be led by Andrew Micklethwaite.

"Last season was bizarre in many ways, but the cricket was a lot of fun. It was great to see the boys perform so well, and I feel like I learned a lot about my players. Fingers crossed we will be able to get our overseas players into the country and they will give us a real boost. Looking at the division we are going to be in I really do think we can compete strongly; we built a lot of momentum in winning our division last year and I look forward to that winning feeling again".

The Second XI will see a change in leadership with Alec McClure set to be replaced by Matthew Riley who returned to the club at the start of the 2020 season.

On hearing of his appointment Matthew Riley said “I am looking forward to taking on the role here at Thornham having rejoined earlier this year, it’s definitely good to be back after so long away. I have some previous captaincy experience from my time in Yorkshire so I hope to use some of that to help us win games in 2021. We have some good young players and a few experienced heads so hopefully we can have a good and enjoyable season”.

Finally the Third XI also have a new captain in Matthew Collinge. Matthew replaces Obaid Iqbal, and is returning to the role after work commitments saw him give it up in 2018.

Matthew added “It’s great to take over a strong side after a couple of near misses in the last couple of seasons, and with many new faces added to the group from last time round there’s no reason why we can’t be challenging at the right end of the table. It will be interesting to see what the Sunday structure looks like given the changes. We can’t wait to get out there again after a difficult 2020”.

Thornham Cricket Club would like to place on record thanks to both Alec and Obaid for their efforts and would like to wish all the captains and the teams the best of luck for 2021 season.
