Chairmans update for May

Hello all!!! I hope that you have all been out enjoying the sun, enjoying the cricket, having a drink with your family/friends and generally making the most of this recent uptick in the weather. Here is your most recent update on all things Thornham!

On the field, the weather has wreaked havoc with our games, particularly the junior section. Most of our Saturday cricket has been washed out in May, but the First XI have put the difficulty of their opening day defeat behind them to bounce back strongly and currently occupy joint second place in their division. The 2s are 9th whilst unfortunately the 3rd team are in bottom place. Hopefully they can grab a win soon!
The Second and Third teams are also out of their respective cup competitions, whilst the First XI have their opening cup fixture this Sunday 6th June.

Our junior section has their first League game coming up, which is massively exciting for all concerned. The club has provided playing kit for the children, and everyone on committee wishes the players all the best – hopefully this introduction to cricket will result in a lifelong love of the sport. If you know anyone interested in playing cricket, either senior or junior, message the Facebook page and one of us will point you in the right direction. Junior training continues to be popular on Tuesdays whilst our adult training nights remain open to all on Thursdays.

In a first for the Club during my time here, we have had enough playing interest to put together a friendly 4th XI. This is absolutely amazing, and it is great to see so many people who want to be involved in playing the game we love. The 4th XI will hopefully be kept alive through the rest of the season – our intention is to arrange half a dozen or so friendlies if we can, to generate and keep that interest in the game. Players who are not yet getting a game every weekend – I ask you to please bear with us and trust that we will be looking to arrange as much as reasonably can.

Our social calendar for June has now been published and is available to view on the Facebook page – I am sure it will also be available on the website soon too. Please take a look and mark our events in your diaries – it will be lovely to see as many of our members as possible down at the Club enjoying not only the cricket but the various social events that we as a Club provide for your benefit as members.
Twenty20 cricket has also now started! These fixtures are available to view on the social calendar and for people who are perhaps new to cricket or want to watch in the evening with a point, these are perfect for your needs (unless you are a purist!). I would like to reiterate my thanks for our 4 main T20 kit sponsors – your support has resulted in us being able to refresh our coloured playing kit and now we really do look the part on the field.
As a reminder, those 4 sponsors are:
The Commercial pub in Castleton
Southern Cross Plumbing & Heating
Forever Composite
Phenomenal Group

We were able to ease some of our restrictions on the 21st of May as part of the national easing in line with the Government’s roadmap. I have so far been delighted with our members’ approach to following the guidance – I do not have to reprimand too many people too often which is very pleasing, because I take no pleasure in telling off people that I consider friends. Please do your part and continue to follow whatever restrictions are in place at whatever time you come to the Club.
Finally, in my last update I made the membership aware of a vacancy on the committee until the next AGM in December. Following a number of expressions of interest, I am delighted to announce the committee has agreed to co-opt Marcus Young. Congratulations Marcus – we will see you at the next committee meeting!
